Program Notes:
As a young teenager, two of my biggest loves were playing violin and reading science-fiction novels. “Space Invaders!” combines those two inspirations into a zany spookfest for an advanced middle-school orchestra. Its main melody came by combining the opening melodic motive of my chamber piece “Islands on Fog” with the rhythmic motive from The Kingsmen’s “Louie, Louie.” Along the way, “Space Invaders!” also introduces young players to simple string harmonics and to Bartók pizzicato.
