Description
Program Notes:
As a teenage violinist, I wrote my first compositions to be performed by my middle- and high- school orchestras. More than a decade later, as I neared the end of my formal music education, I again had the opportunity to write for high-school orchestra. I decided to base this new work on a melody I had written as a teenager. I called the resulting piece “Aspen Song” for three reasons. First, as a shout out to Utah and its state tree for the work’s dedicatees, Vanese Landry and the Lone Peak Symphonic Orchestra (Highland, Utah). Second, as a reflection of the tune’s rustic nature. And third, as a way of acknowledging the connections between this new piece and the old one, which reminded me of how aspen trees share their root structures.
