I’m pleased to announce the recordings and publication of two very different solos for oboe and violin: one for the instrument alone, the other with piano accompaniment; one comprising a variety of moods, most fast, the other composed of a single, slow mood.
The former, Daydreams and Postlude for solo oboe, is my latest piece and is now up on SoundCloud. Written for oboist Jeralee Johnson, the piece was inspired by Britten’s classic Six Metamorphoses After Ovid as well as by pastoral images such as the von Lenbach painting above.
In four movements, Daydreams consists of three fantasies — a gnarly tocatta, a rustic dance, and a plaintive chant — and a cantankerous finale. View the complete details, including purchase links, at piece’s catalog entry.
The latter, the lyrical “night flocks of angels trumpet,” I wrote three years ago. One of my favorite pieces, this violin and piano duet was adapted from the ninth movement of A Field Guide to Natural History. I now have a recording of it, thanks to violinist Dan Stepner, and it’s now up on YouTube and SoundCloud.
Just under 5 minutes long, “night flocks” can be played by most violinists, from good high school players to seasoned professionals. It would program well in several settings: as a set with other miniatures; as an intimate, lyrical encore; or as a palate cleanser after a fast or intense piece.
